Nowhere to Run

Video with original score by Matthew Comeau
2014

Nowhere To Run was shot on location at the former Michigan Palace Theater in Detroit, U.S.A. In popular imagination Detroit has become synonymous with three things; cars, music an urban decay. The theater encompasses all of these traits as it was built on the site of Henry Ford’s first workshop, became an infamous music venue and now has in some ways come full circle in its current incarnation as a parking garage. The piece is edited according to Morse Code spelling out the lyrics to the Martha Reeves and The Vandellas Motown hit Nowhere To Run for which one of the first music videos was shot on the Ford assembly line where Motown founder Berry Gordy had originally worked. The Motown method of music production famously borrowed heavily from lessons Gordy had learned on the Ford assembly line. In the original score for this video piece Matthew Comeau has used many of the same techniques that The Funk Brothers (Motown’s in house back up band) used on the original recording of Nowhere To Run.
