Mary Cassidy, Los Angeles, 1950’s

Mary Cassidy, Los Angeles, 1950’s

There is a little-used room off the kitchen at my grandmother’s house that has always been called ‘Mary’s room’. I was an adult before I found out who Mary was. Mary Cassidy was my father’s much loved nanny. My mother once found a grade school photo of my father, on the back he had written a dedication: “to my very best friend Mary”. Mary committed suicide by overdosing on pills. It was my grandmother who found her by the pool. My grandparents, never able to find her next of kin, buried her at Hollywood Forever cemetery in Los Angeles.
