Lloyd Orwin and Fellow Marine, Iwo Jima, 1945

Lloyd Orwin and Fellow Marine, Iwo Jima, 1945

My grandmother always liked to mention that her brother had been at Iwo Jima. I would look over to Lloyd and watch him shift uncomfortably when she brought it up. When asked he would usually say he had lost many friends or “we lost so many, so young” and the expression on his face kept you from pressing further. There were so many things I wanted to ask him about that time, but out of respect I waited for a day that never came. Lloyd passed away in February 2008. The eulogies and obituaries all mentioned that he’d been at the battle of Iwo Jima but it is only through reading the accounts of other soldiers that I can begin to imagine what he witnessed in the weeks before he was hit by shrapnel and evacuated from what must have been hell on earth.
